All our eco-friendly toys are plastic free and contain no plastic in the packaging. The new boxes or pouches we deliver in are 70-100% recycled and 100% recyclable. We will also re-use packaging which we receive goods in. We use biodegradable labels and craft tape instead of plastic tape.
Since its inception, there is now 6.3 billion tons of non-recyclable plastic waste on our planet. 90% of children’s toys bought today are manufactured using plastic and will usually not last longer than a few years. With an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic going into the ocean each year, envirotoy promise to donate 1% of our turnover to various initiatives who’s goal is to reduce the amount of plastic in our oceans. This donation will happen in March each year – we may alter projects we support but the 1% will always stand!
What constitutes an Eco Friendly Toy for us?
First and foremost all the gorgeous toys in our shop must be 100% plastic free, very simple. This does also count out recycled plastic toys. We think it’s really great that old bottle and straws fro example are being used for something lovely like making a toy. However at the end of the recycled toys life it will still be a ‘pollutant’ – for this reason we have decided to go 100% plastic free.
Biodegrading is the process of a material being broken down naturally over time by natural organisms like bacteria. This is something that cannot happen to the majority of plastics. Sunlight will break plastic down into smaller and smaller pieces over time but it will never dissappear – unfortunately, these tiny pieces of plastic will pollute our food chain and eco systems in ways that we struggle to see.
A material like wood on the other hand, will biodegrade. In certain circumstance like in land fill this could take up 13 years, however it will completely degrade to leave no trace and re-enter the natural cycle of the planet. (providing any paints used are also natural).
It is very important that we understand where the wood or rubber is sourced from in the lovely toys that we sell. For example, UK made products would likely be FSC, while products from developing countries are often made using a sustainable Rubberwood source. We won’t stock a toy made in China, for example, where the materials have no provenance.
We sell toys that are made in the UK, Europe, USA and also less developed countries like Sri Lanka and Indonesia. When sourcing a product from a country such as Sri Lanka or Indonesia, we ensure the company operates with Fair Trade values – this ensures that the people and communities get the opportunities, development and wage that their skills deserve.
